IELTS Scoring System
IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system to measure your English language proficiency. Each of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored individually, and then an overall band score is calculated.

Official Calculation Method
The overall band score is calculated by taking the average of your four individual scores and rounding to the nearest whole or half band. Here's how the rounding works:
- If the average ends in .25: Round down to the nearest 0.5
- If the average ends in .75: Round up to the nearest 0.5
- If the average ends in .5: Keep as is
- If the average is a whole number: Keep as is
Example Calculations
Example 1:
Listening: 6.5, Reading: 6.0, Writing: 6.0, Speaking: 7.0
Average: (6.5 + 6.0 + 6.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.375
Overall Band Score: 6.5 (rounded up from 6.375)
Listening: 6.5, Reading: 6.0, Writing: 6.0, Speaking: 7.0
Average: (6.5 + 6.0 + 6.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.375
Overall Band Score: 6.5 (rounded up from 6.375)
Example 2:
Listening: 7.0, Reading: 6.5, Writing: 6.5, Speaking: 7.5
Average: (7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 + 7.5) ÷ 4 = 6.875
Overall Band Score: 7.0 (rounded up from 6.875)
Listening: 7.0, Reading: 6.5, Writing: 6.5, Speaking: 7.5
Average: (7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 + 7.5) ÷ 4 = 6.875
Overall Band Score: 7.0 (rounded up from 6.875)
Understanding Your Band Score
- Band 9: Expert user - Full operational command
- Band 8: Very good user - Very good command
- Band 7: Good user - Good operational command
- Band 6: Competent user - Generally effective command
- Band 5: Modest user - Partial command
- Band 4: Limited user - Limited command
